Birding find: Bohemian Waxwings

Post by Keitha »

We're having a taste of spring in North Bay this weekend, with the sun shining and temperatures above freezing. I went for a little exploratory drive yesterday, and happened upon a parkette in a small town 20 minutes south of here with a small flock of Bohemian Waxwings enjoying these berries for lunch. This bird is a lifer for me; the addition of which made even sweeter when I heard from my cousins - the serious birders in the family - that they've never seen one. I've always thought from photos that their colours are so smooth as to appear air-brushed, and seeing the birds IRL hasn't changed my opinion of that. Beautiful to see.

Oh good for you Keitha! Congrats on the lifer. We don't have the Bohemian but do have the Cedar Waxwing wintering here...soon to be leaving. Your "airbrush" description is perfect. The Cedars are the same way...ombre-like. Beautiful!

Cool!!

I once saw a little flock of Cedars as they were migrating up the coast. They stopped in a wild cherry shrub that was in our yard. They were lovely. And these look great, too.

Airbrushed is a perfect description, it looks so smooth and delicate when you zoom into the photo.
