2016 October Card Sketch Challenge - Pop Up Panel Card

And yes, this is a bit of a challenge but once you've made it, it sticks. I've made 5 so far and now it just comes naturally...or reasonably so. This card style is popping up all over the place so it isn't THAT challenging!

I am going to do a number of step by step photos and measurements for the cuts and scoring but I'll also give you a link to Dawn's video taking you through all the steps. Between my instructions and her video it should be pretty clear what to do. If you're having any trouble just ask and I'll get you through it. It is definitely easier having someone live explaining it than my writing this all out. But it's fun...so here we go. This version makes an A2 size card.

I recommend the first one you make, make it with paper you're not in love with. I used 2 basic colored card stock the first time to understand the mechanics of it and not worry about any goof ups.

Materials:

Paper trimmer
Scoring board
Ruler
Bone Folder
Adhesive

Cutting measurements:
8.5 x 11 paper works great for this card

Exterior card base: 4.25 x 11 Top folding card base
Interior folding base: 10.75 x 8.5
Interior folding strip: 11 x 2.75
Interior inserts: 5 x 3 5/8 you will need two of these. There will be further cut at the top which will be in instructions later.

1. Cut paper using above measurements
2. Take the 10.75 x 8.5 and score it on the horizontal at 5 3/8 Turn it vertically on on your scoring board and score the length at 2.25, 4.25 and 6.25
3. Take the 11 x 2.75 strip and horizontally on score board, score at 2.75, 5.5 and 8.25

4. Fold the 10.75 x 8.5 in half along the score line you made at 5 3/8.
5. Take a ruler and make a tic mark one inch in from the folded edge at each side. Now move the ruler from the fold line in another quarter inch and make tic marks on the outer score lines. With the ruler connect the two tic marks with a pencil line. (I have the the first to photos reversed but I think you can tell what I am talking about)

Here comes the tricky part.

6. You are now going to cut along the line you drew as well as along the score lines leading up to the drawn lines while paper is still folded. It will look like a t-shirt as in the first photo.

7. Open it up and you now have shape as in photo 2.

8. You will now fold the left side upwards and across so the score lines meet up and the crease intersects at the center of all score lines - use a bone folder to make a good crease. Make sense? Now do the same for the other side.

9. Now that you have criss-cross score lines fold the "sleeves" of the "t-shirt" inwards to form a "house".

10. Next step is to make the inserts (which later can be decorative, patterned paper) for the card interior. Take the rectangle you cut at 5 x 3 5/8 and use the "house" - the folded interior base - as a template to make the "roof" of your insert. Draw lines for the pointed end and cut along that line just inside the drawn line.

11. At this point you can adhere the inserts into the interior base and cut 4, 2.5 squares and adhere to the 11 x 2.75 strip and fold into an "M".

12. With the interior base open and the inserts in place, use adhesive on the top left edge of the sleeve and the bottom right edge of the sleeve. Hopefully you can see were I've placed a small area with my ATG.

13. Take the 2.75 x 11 strip and accordion fold it in so the "good side" is inside. Place it as shown in the photo with the folded edges at the top and the open end about 1/4 inch from the bottom of the insert. Now fold down the "sleeve" with the adhesive on the right down onto the folded strip. Turn it around and do the same for the other sleeve. when you open it you'll see your accordion folded strip open up!

14. (sorry no photo...oops) With the interior base closed up to look like the "house", place it inside your top folded A2, scored card base. Make sure there is a little room at the top so the card can close. Add adhesive to the side facing upwards and carefully close the card down on top of it. Flip it over and do the same on the other side. Your card is now complete!

NOTE: Be sure when you are using patterned paper that you are aware of any directional patterns so everything is right-side-up.

Oh yeah...I kind of forgot the front in all the excitement (NOT) of explaining this.

So the cover obviously can be whatever you wish just like the inside. But here is my cover as well as the completed card. I will be adding some things inside later.

Thank you for your patience while I wrote this tome. And if you think I am nuts and don't want anything to do with this, I totally understand. But really, it's quite fun and very satisfying to make.

Tell me, when did you start this card? Did you watch the video? I just finished about an hour ago writing my version of the instructions so obviously you started way before that. Which is wonderful in showing how easy this can be done.

Holy Smokes! You're right! I was first given the instructions on a photocopied sheet from Griffith's blog. Both the friend who gave it to me and I "recognized" it to be Snowangel. How can two women who both do Stampin' Up demonstrations look so much alike? So my bad. I must give credit to the video to Dawn Griffith. I find it hard to actually read the script used to spell her last name. I do need to visit my eye doc.

I was anxious to try this, I'd actually been seeing them all over Pinterest before you posted the challenge. I need a card for my Mom's birthday so I tried it out. Your posting the challenge I was the push I needed Farley! Now I want to make Halloween ones.
