When Life Gives You Lemons

Post by azemigh »

My son bought his first brand new car in December of 2014 and within 2 months it started having transmission problems. Well, after 4 times in for the same problem in December of 2015 he started researching the "lemon" law to see about getting his money back and getting rid of the piece of well, you know. 2 weeks ago, he went through arbitration and won his case, yeah! Gets all his money back plus attorney fees. He asked me to make a little dashboard "lemon" for his new car so he can look back on the year and half hassle with a smile once in awhile. Since it's April and Stress Awareness month I added a set of wheels and a branch exhaust pipe to the stress lemon posted by the crafty yarn council. And, Paul wanted a goofy face and loves Stephen Colbert, so the new Colbert emogee face was perfect. The first one is my practice one that I didn't add wheels to and the second is the one I'll give to my son.

So sorry he had this experience but so thankful there are laws to protect him.
Your lemon is adorable!

How stinkin' adorable! Although I'm sorry to hear he had such a hassle - but at least he won!

Thanks all, it was a big deal to get the attorney fees. Apparently, you can't get them if the car company doesn't use an attorney, as in sends a "representative". His attorney fees were over $2000 and it wasn't a real expensive car $15K, but they went back over every piece of correspondence and found that the car company did have an attorney send the first response letter to the complaint and once that happened, they could recover all attorney fees. Yeah!

Very cool lemon.

And you have to know, the first question on my lips is, which manufacturer?
If you are permitted to answer.

Congrats to him. It's not often the little guy wins.

We know a couple who were able to return their new Mini Cooper to the dealer after many many problems and walk away from it. Cute car but you wouldn't catch me buying one.

Not sure if I'm supposed to say, but I hear many can be found on road dead!

I wondered that, too, immediately.

Jen, we love our Mini Cooper and have had no problem at all in 1 1/2 years.

I love all of my Fords - but I researched models before I bought. Except for the F350. That was George's baby.

That lemon is great!
And what a good story - so glad it worked out for him in the end!

I guess every car manufacturer has some issues at some time. My niece and my soon to be niece-in-law love their minis! I think Jen just doesn't want a small car

You are probably correct, Nancy. Coming over the Altamont Pass in Friday afternoon traffic in the rain last month, I felt like I was in a little tiny toy car in my Forester. I was literally sandwiched between tractor trailer rigs and couldn't see anywhere around me. I was like the filling in an Oreo. Unnerving. I had no idea what was in front of us...perhaps aliens had landed? All I knew is that I was going 3-5 miles an hour for most of it. Yikes.
