Inspirational Drawing Class by Paivi Eerola

Post by mpizzazz »

I dithered all summer about signing up for this 4 week class. I'm so glad I did, it started on Monday and is wonderful. A great bunch of supportive women from all over the world are in the class, showing their work and talking about coloring and pencils and erasers. You know, important stuff like that!
And besides the videos and pdfs, Paivi is very active on the group with her instructions and critiques. I can't wait to see what we do next week.
This is my drawing from the first class and how I colored it two ways. I'll probably keep working on them now and then as I see places where I could make improvements.

Oh my gosh Marianne! I can see why you are so excited. Your examples are fabulous. Love the sailing ship...did it start out to be a ship or did you see it after the fact of your initial sketch? Awesome!

Wow...very cool. I too, like the at sea example. I'm not sure my mind works that way, but it would be fun to find out. It seems so freeing...

The whole drawing was a doodle, Farley. No thinking was allowed. After we wrote our names and one word then we did faux writing and doodles as fast as we could. Later you could add details if you wanted. There were other parts to the exercise which I haven't shown. I didn't see the ship until a lot of the first coloring was done. I thought it would be an interesting exercise to take the same doodle/drawing and color it completely different.

Thank you, everyone, it really is fun. This first exercise was about loosening up, getting rid of the doubts, self criticism, expectations, etc. A lot of classmates have struggled but after a week, you can see a big change in their attitudes. Everyone is having a great time.

Pat, it is all very freeing. Most people start out thinking a drawing needs to look like something but we can all be trained to let go of that idea. Same with the coloring-it's just grab any color and use it.

I'm so unconscious sometimes. I'm just now realizing that your class originates on Peony and Parakeet! It's been a while since I looked there but I get regular emails for her blog. Duh me. Her art for the most part gets my attention and looking at some of her students' work, I'd say you get an A+ for your first lessons. I'll pay closer attention from now on.

Marianne,
You are so multi-talented and have such a great eye for line and color.
So glad you are enjoying this class.

Guess I should have mentioned Paivi's blog is Peony and Parakeet for anyone who does not know her. The class has a private Facebook page so that is where we are spending our time in the class. http://www.peonyandparakeet.com/

Here are last week's drawing exercises-patterns. The problem with this stuff is they never really seem finished.

I tried some pan pastels on this one.

This one got muddy because I used a nonwaterproof pen and then tried to watercolor. Not a good idea. Luckily black and yellow do make green.

One more. Using a fan format. The colorful paper is a giant coffee filter that was randomly painted with acrylics years ago.
