Inking Embossing Folders

Post by azemigh »

I tried a little experiment inking embossing folders. Marianne asked the question in the coloring on Kraft thread, and I love this technique so I thought I'd see what happens with some different inks. I've only done Distress and CS Hybrid so far, but I'll try some more and post the results here too.

First: Distress on Water color paper with a spritz of water on the ink after you ink it up. The water really makes the ink blend and flow.

Second: CS Hybrid on Water color paper with a spritz of water on the ink. The water really just sat on top of the ink, so I don't think it really added much.

The left picture is the negative side of the folder and the right picture is the positive side.

These are the same inks, but plain white cardstock.

First: Distress Inks with a spritz of water. The water really saturates the plain paper and causes too much blending of the ink

Second: CS Hybrid Inks with no water. The color stays very vibrant. Personally, I like the positive image side. the negative side just seems too intense.

I bow to your ability to make a gorgeous image this way! They will all be usable I should think. Great colors. Personally I guess I just need to take more time and play with it. Thanks for the comparisons.

I'm with you on the positive images - much more detail visible. These are gorgeous and make me want to play. (Retirement is coming closer and closer.)

I played some more with different inks and papers with the same embossing folder today. Again, the left side is the negative and the right is the positive.

1st: Chalk Inks: left is Bristol paper (very smooth drawing cardstock); right side is water color paper with a spritz of water

2nd: Pigment Ink: left water color paper with water; right water color paper no water

3rd: Bazzil Inks: left bristol paper with a spritz of rubbing alcohol; right bristol paper nothing extra

1st: Adirondack Rainbow pad: bristol paper no extras

2nd: Alcohol Inks on glossy paper; left and middle AI is pounced onto folder with felt on a blending tool; believe it or not right is the same colors dripped onto folder with a few spritzes of rubbing alcohol. These have to be done quickly so the AI doesn't dry

3rd: This is what my folder looks like after. Got most of the ink off, but as expected some staining occurred with all the dye inks and the AI

In conclusion: I like the Distress inks the best and the alcohol drip method second. Not sure I would bother with the other inks.

It looks like the spritz of water or alcohol really helps the inks to move into the crevices. Thanks for all your experimenting. You didn't show us what your hands look like, Rachelle! I hope they return to their original color aong with the embossing folder!

Hands fared surprisingly well. Just a regular soap and water clean up!

Nice comparison for this experiment. I agree about the Distress and IA inks giving the best results. I haven't played much with AI, but have always loved how reactive the Distress inks are with water.
