Fabric Instead of Paper
Fabric Instead of Paper
I haven't been posting much paper arts, I've been sewing a lot:
The Splendid Sampler started Feb. 14. I've done the first block but it's going to be changed when the 'real' fabrics arrive. I had a hard time making up my mind what to use. What a surprise, it's just like picking out paper for a layout. Then I did the bonus block they included to keep us busy before the whole thing really started, an extra heart block for all the extra hearts
and a practice block for Block 2 while I'm waiting for the 'real' fabrics to arrive. The blocks are 6" finished. AND, I am also doing the Mighty Lucky Quilting Club which is one technique a month.
Here are my blocks for Jan-playing with bias tape- and Feb-minimalist improv. It was serendipity that the two lines lined up on the blocks. I'll trim off the extra fabric to make the bottom one square.

and, wait, there's more!
Two UFOs from the 90s or early 00s.
The first one is foundation pieced houses and a hot air balloon, some scrap of building fabric and the balloon fabric. The second was a stained glass appliqued block I did for hand stitching busy work at the quilt group and never found a home for it. Trying to do something modern with it so I quilted concentric squares around the block.

Wow, wow, wow, Marianne!!! These are so gorgeous, I can't imagine what's going to be changed when the real fabric arrives. I did do a double take looking at this first heart with the banner and had to tell my self this is stitched...not stamped! Fabulous. Love the colors in the Shuffle Block and your arrangement of hearts for Leftover Hearts is great...like masking stamps. Serendipitous indeed! I really like the contemporary look of those lines. Just amazing. Do keep posting your progress, I love seeing this being that I am utterly inept at such a wonderful art.
Hahaha...I waited just enough to see these last two before it let me post. So amazing! What fun the hot air balloon square is. Your little flower patch is so elegant wrapped around in the black rows. Love that one...brilliant idea.
You. Have. Been. Busy. And creatively so!

They're all gorgeous! I especially like the design of the houses and balloons.
Re: Fabric Instead of Paper
Love the channel quilting around the stained glass, but my favorite is the heart on top.

Love the practice blocks while you're waiting
for the "real" fabric to arrive.
They look pretty good to me and they don't look like

Elizabeth, you have no idea. Between being out of practice sewing and having 15-20 year old fabric, I am very slow. At least with paper, I have more to choose from but fabrics have changed a lot in the last 10-12 years since I really quilted. I like what I see out there instead of my tired old stash. Sounds like us with our old paper stash.
Techniques have changed. There is a whole new generation of quilters out there doing really interesting things in the time I have been away. It is both frustrating and exciting.

Here is a quilt top I finished recently. My first Modern Quilt which to me means using white fabric in it. Made the top last Summer out of scraps following the Scrap Vortex Quilt of Amanda Jean Nyberg. This is a great way to use up scraps. It is organized but random.

Last month I used a friend's longarm quilting machine to quilt it. I just did big loops over it and it only took a few hours. I've been waiting for weeks to get a photo when it isn't raining or windy. So you get sun and shadows of trees on it instead.
