2020 Adventure Bird Journal

Post by paddlegal »

Here is my other insane journal idea. I do like to keep track of my birding in a more formal way. I keep a field journal with me at all times to list birds while out birding, either doing a survey or just out on my own for fun. I decided to start a new separate CANVO just for birding and ordered one of the new ones that CP just brought out. At the end of my birding day I’ll add my list to this book. Repetition is good for me as I list and remember the day’s birds. I often as I list them, play their songs and calls on one of my birding apps to cement my knowledge and details of the species seen that day. Yeah, call me obsessive. Believe me, I know birders far and away worse than me and my husband thanks me for not being as bad as they are, LOL.

I will keep a monthly calendar of birding obligations and plans, a daily “backyard” bird list on one page and then the subsequent pages will be of individual days that I am out birding with some detailed info.

Farley, you know I LOVE this. Just out of curiosity, what kind of field journal do you use?

Keitha I’ve used for many years a large but simple undated DayMinder. I liked the unlimited space it gave me and they last easily two years.

The last two photos are from one I’m trying out for fun and I like that it is smaller and though undated all you need to do is circle the month and date at the top. I found this at a Barnes and Noble bookstore a few weeks ago.

Thanks for sharing those Farley. I'm always interested in what others do; I typically carry a Field Notes pocket journal which is much smaller - but I know on your bird surveys you see a LOT more birds than I do so the extra room makes sense. And can I just say that if you're writing this in the field, I'm impressed with how neat it is; sometimes even I have a hard time deciphering my chicken scratch when I get home, LOL. I should use the BBL codes more.

I do carry a small pocket size journal and then transfer to the larger one. But typically I just remember what I saw by going over my life list. That triggers any I might have forgotten and then I write it down in the big book. The new little one was done that way, hence the neatness.

Do you use the eBird app? It’s a great way to list your birds in the field on your phone. Then once done you post it to your personal online list that is also published globally. I think you would really enjoy it at home and on your job. It will show you where the birds are wherever you are in the world.

I am familiar with ebird but haven't used the app. Just a matter of teaching an old dog new tricks I guess.

It took me awhile to get comfortable with eBird in the field. I do it when I feel like it. Many of my birding friends have 100s if not 1000s of posted lists. I am not quite as obsessive as they are.
