Antelope Canyon-Million Dollar Shot

Post by Debbie J »

This is the last 8x10.

It’s called the million dollar shot because a photographer took it and sold to National Geographic for a million bucks. Some interesting information our guide told us was several years ago National Geographic had exclusive photo opportunities for 5 days during monsoon to document what happens inside the canyon during heavy rains. They went in there and drilled holes to attach their cameras to the walls, a big storm came rushing through, 40 feet tall washing all the equipment into Lake Powell. The Navajo Nation fined them 750,000 for the holes and banned them for life. In 1997 11 hikers were swept away and drowned. Some bodies were found in Lake Powell and some were never found.

There are just no words! The photo and the ignorance of the photographers who would deface such a beautiful place.

You’re doing such a good job of allowing these photos to shine!

Debbie, your photos are wonderful, thankyou for sharing them with us. They have brought back happy memories of a trip we did in1998. We visited Antelope Canyon and were totally amazed by the swirling rock formations. We went on an organised tour in a jeep, just five of us, late afternoon, and were the only ones there!!

And now I know why we didn't see Antelope Canyon... probably wasn't in the books and info we were reading because it had just opened in 1997, the year we visited.

If you google Peter Lik he has a lot of Antelope Canyon photos but I didn’t see this one in his collection so I do t know if he’s the photographer of this “million dollar photo” or someone else. Our guide told us the name but I don’t remember. That’s a nice pay pay for this photographs tho.

Yep.... decent money... LOL

Especially if no one will be allowed to take their own photos from now on.

Can't get over the fact that photographers damaged the rock in that canyon... so sad. And that's why the rest of us have to suffer. Grrrr
