This one represents all the LOUD redneck pickup trucks that are in abundance, here. It’s about as redneck as I can do…

Hopefully I’ll be able to create a couple more ideas in the next day or two.

When I began thinking about this area, I knew I would have to include tobacco somehow…but how? I didn’t grow up knowing much about tobacco; rather, my dad preached sternly against tobacco and anything pertaining to it. Many folks who have lived here their whole life, worked in tobacco as did generations before them. I “interviewed” my 86 y/o coworker, last week, and learned quite a bit about how it was grown, harvested & cured…including a story of how she would “drive” the horse drawn slide from the field to the barn and back & when she would get tired, she would stop part way to give the horse an apple, which gave her a little break. She thought no one knew until her grandfather asked her about it!

I just couldn’t decide how to pull off a holiday card using a tobacco image of some kind…until I remembered Pam’s cardinal cards. Thank you Marianne for making me really stretch with this challenge, and thank you Pam for the inspiration for this one. I may have one more idea…we’ll see !

My grandparents grew and sold a lot of tobacco. It was hard, dirty work. Mom & her siblings had the loathesome job of hand picking the tobacco worms and then topping the plants. She said the sap was so sticky and hard to wash off. When my cousins and I happened to be there at the right time, we rode on the slide to provide some ballast. What fun! It was so bumpy and falling off set off fits of laughter. I can still hear Grandpa directing his mules with shouts of “gee” or “haw”.

Beautiful image, Beki! You're really embracing this challenge.

I had to look up other uses for tobacco and was interested to read about biofuels, pesticides and cooking!

What a wonderful memory, Pam!

Marianne, the many uses of most products always interests me. Who knew tobacco wasn’t just for smoking!
