Prayers for my dad
Prayers for my dad
So, long story short...Dad fell and fractured L2 and a rib. Surgery was not an option due to his age and dementia.
When he woke up from the pain medicine & transport from the local hospital to Vanderbilt, he can no longer swallow and his dementia is much worse. From what I can tell, he fell two weeks ago and has been in hospital since the 19th. When I was there, he knew me for a few minutes (and how I'll treasure those short conversations!). He's supposed to get a permanent feeding tube today or tomorrow and hopefully go to a skilled nursing facility Friday or Saturday. He'll be in a body brace for about 2 more weeks when they'll do more xrays to see if the fracture is stable enough to remove it.
Sometimes he knows my brother and sometimes not. I have no idea if that's from worsening dementia (dramatic decline), or medications, or hospital delirium, or a combination.
Vanderbilt will give information to only one family member per patient so what little information I get is filtered through my brother who is in the middle of another (one of many) massive pity parties (grrrrrrrrrr).
Please keep him in your prayers. They mean the world to me.

Oh sweetie I am so very sorry. This is a hard one I know all too well. I went through something similar with my mom, her dementia and fractured pelvis. I am keeping the best of thoughts for you all.

Thank you everyone. They placed his permanent feeding tube today so he could be ready for the nursing home in 2 or 3 days. I worry too much about him being in the hospital so long. Nurses know too much about what all can go wrong in those scary places.

They placed his permanent feeding tube on Friday. They said he could transfer to skilled nursing after 48-72 hours. Still rarely recognizes anyone. I hope to try to talk with him on the phone this week.
