October 2020 Card Challenge - Easy Masking

Post by paddlegal »

Since we’ve all become so familiar with masks I thought a different, more enjoyable kind of masking would be fun. Masking fun you say? Well my first sample is the easiest kind of masking. I’ll get some other samples done soon that may be a little more involved. I just wanted to have something at the ready for you and the upcoming World Card Making Day/Weekend.

My easy masking is simply using light tack tape across the card and stamping whatever you want over it. The open space is left for a sentiment. I use Heffy Doodle’s blue masking tape and love it. It’s strong enough to hold but doesn’t tear the paper when you remove it. All stamps are from Altenew “Halftone Circles”, CP inks and sequins plus Distress Mica Spray splatters in copper.

Thank you Pam and Debbie.

Debbie, yes Tim’s Distress Mica Spray. It’s my favorite.

This is the last lesson of the Strathmore workshop. Masking off little sections with 1/4" tape and doing something different in each section. I'd like to try with 1/8" tape if they make such a thing. This tape is a bit large for card fronts. The warm color card front is a dry embossed piece that was in with my watercolor paper. I turned it over so the raised areas were underneath. Watercolor all over then white pen in the recessed lines of the embossing. I like the effect.

Marianne these are terrific. How timely too! That’s a great idea creating sections like you did with tape. What you did with the white gel pen is brilliant.

Thanks, Farley. I had saved that embossed flower panel for years, it might have come in a swap. Of course, as soon as I started to watercolor the raised side, I ruined it. You get a second chance on the other side of the paper and I'm happy with how the "back" side turned out with the white pen. The pen seems to do ok on lighter paints.

Wonderful cards! I may even have to try that with one of my Christmas cards.

I thought about the warm card all evening and tried to guess how you created it. Just now checked to see if I was even close. Nope. Not even. You're brilliant.

Ha ha, Pam! It's easy, the pen fit right in the grooves of the embossed outlines. That embossing folder belongs to one of you, I got it in a swap or used it at a ReCreate.

That was definitely a neat idea using the debossed side of the watercolor paper and then using the white gel pen...

Another card with simple masking. This time I taped off the center so I could stencil the leaf borders.

A very "cool" Autumn card, Farley. Not a hint of orange or gold, I love it!
