2021 February Card Sketch - Backgrounds of Die Cut Shapes

Post by paddlegal »

What? Die cut shapes? How’s that?

We all have die sets that are either stacks of the same shapes in ascending sizes or die sets from a stamp collection that have a number of related elements. Take a collection of related or unrelated dies and create a background with them. Then add a sentiment or other focal point.

Here are two samples so far.

First was made from a semi-half round stack set from MFT. Cut the shapes from CP card stock and blended with “analogous” colors. CP has a new color wheel showing her Party colors. I’ve never used one but it was fun with her ink colors on it.

Second card background was made from a set of different shaped heart dies. The polka dot pattern is actually a CP black and white patterned card stock that also happens to be black toner ink. So I foiled 3 in gold and the rest in a pink melon foil. Clustered the hearts and then added the love/heart die over it.

Oh, Farley! I love, love, LOVE the polka dot hearts!

I have a few various graduates shapes & need to use them...I need to put on my thinking cap & make a version or 100 of this brilliant concept.

They're pretty wonderful!
I actually used my dies yesterday. I have no excuse - will do come cutting on my lunch break today (assuming I get one...)

Great cards! I'm not much of a card maker, but I want to try to get back into some of these challenges, just to get me putting hands back on all of my tools I haven't used in ages.

You can also try this for a part of a design element for a LO Julie.

Oh my gosh. I got it in my head that I was going to do this challenge and I dug out what I thought was the perfect die set. I have this set of sizzlet dies - 4 of them - that make a butterfly. Haven't used it in ages, if ever. And I now swear by all that is holy that I am going to just toss the set. I've cut out all of the pieces, and for the love of Pete - I'll be damned if I can make any sense of how these parts are supposed to go together. I've been putzing with it for the last hour, including searching ebay and pinterest to try to find references.

Does anyone have the Sizzix Sizzlet Butterfly Parts Set #2 in their collection? If I can't figure out how this butterfly wing is supposed to go together, I'm just going to put the set in the trash and find another (more obvious) die set to work with.. :tomato:

Julie I hope you get some help with it.

I envisioned a beautiful birthday card for my mom and I hate it. Going to see if it can be salvaged - or if it needs to end up in the recycle bin.

I finally found the right search terms to get a hit. Never would have figured it out otherwise. I did ultimately get a full butterfly made last night, but it's way larger than I was imagining and isn't suitable for being in the background of anything. But it will eventually become a "thinking of you" kind of card or something. I still think those dies might need to go in the trash. LOL. So I need to find another background die idea.

Well, I just kept layering until I liked it.
Farley, I promise there are die cut hearts. I cut two layers from the floral paper and one layer of white cardstock. I stacked them before using foam pop dots. IRL you can see some of them. It was way better in my imagination.
Mom will love it and that’s all that matters! :)

Nope. That's the one that kept coming up for me too. I finally found it on ebay, and managed to get a card made, though the image was so large that it's definitely not a background - it's a total focal point. I've still got this challenge on my list, as I've got a ridiculous amount of dies. But looking for a "thinking of you" to complete this card is what took me down my stamp rabbit hole, so the challenge remains on the list. :-)

Here is the card though. Not submitted for the background die challenge, but proof that I've at least thought about it.

That butterfly is a stunner for sure!
