My eyes

Post by jmp1022 »

Went to eye Dr Monday. Will have to have both cataracts off. See

surgeon in Jan and will set date real soon for right eye first. I guess it's the worse.

I'm looking at another surgery, also. I have scar tissue on the right eye and will have to have it removed.

Jill, the surgery is a piece of cake. The most amazing thing about it is that you'll notice a huge color difference looking with one eye and then the other. The eye without the cataract now sees white - the one with the cataract sees ecru. You'll soon develop a sunglasses and reading glasses habit.

Thanks everyone
It's a little scary because my Mom lost site in one eye because of macular(sp)
right after her cataract was done.
The surgery didn't cause it but a lot of little things

Macular degeneration can be genetic, so it's a good idea that you're keeping close tabs on your eyes. There are a lot of new treatments for it now that can slow down the damage - not a reversal but will stop the bleeding or slow it down. George has been in several trials at Duke and is now receiving monthly injections to preserve what he has left. He can't drive, but he can sure as heck cook! It's no longer a given that people with MD will completely loose their vision.

Best advice if you're worried about it? Believe it or not - Occuvites. Yep, vitamins for your eyes. That was one of the trials George was in.

Pam that's good info to know.

My youngest sister has the very beginnings if MD and eats lots go leafy greens and vitamins for it. Along with all the good stuff she does to help her RA. She even does CrossFit and is off RA meds!
Now we find out my Dad also has some signs and the eye doctor said I may have a small, spot the could be an indicator.

Are the vitamins OTC?

There's a very simple test for it - it's a grid pattern that you look at with each eye. If there's a black spot or "hole" in the grid, or if the lines are crooked instead of straight, you need to immediately have your eyes examined.

Don't take the ones with lutein if you've smoked within the last 20 years.

My eye doctor gave me the grid paper to check myself every once in a while.
I have never smoked, so I guess I won't worry about that

I'm trying to remember all of what George was told during the trial. I think that lutein can cause cancer if you've smoked within a certain amount of time. I'll check with him and let you know the details.
